About us
We are a friendly, welcoming and dynamic group of local amateur actors, singers, musicians and more, with a focus on providing great entertainment at the biggest theatre in the Highlands.
We perform one show annually, usually around March, and rehearse at various venues from September onwards. The vast majority of rehearsals take place in the evenings, twice a week, and we make sure to not only create great music and theatre, but also provide a welcoming atmosphere for people of all abilities, ages and levels of experience. And the main thing - we have great fun in the process!
We always welcome new members with open arms - why not join the IMT family?

We count ourselves as supremely lucky to be able to perform in the 866-seat Empire Auditorium in Eden Court Theatre - one of the best performance spaces in the UK and the biggest theatre in the Highlands. With professional level equipment-and-support from the theatre, we pride ourselves in providing spectacular, sumptuous and engrossing shows for packed audiences.
Using full size sets, beautiful costumes and professional sound and lighting, as well as support from a live orchestra, we are immensely proud of our productions, which are always well attended and a highlight of the Highland theatre calendar. |
The Inverness Musical Theatre Company, formerly the Inverness Opera Company, was formed in 1925. The first production ever staged was The Mikado, and was performed at the old Central Hall Picture House on Academy Street in Inverness, later to be renamed the Empire Theatre. When the Empire Theatre closed in 1970, the company went on to perform at the Playhouse Cinema, before a disastrous fire burnt it down in 1972. However, the show must go on, and the company went on to perform at the Inverness Royal Academy and the inverness High School, until Eden Court Theatre opened in 1976.
Eden Court Theatre in Inverness has been our performing home ever since. |
Honorary Members
IMT proudly recognises a number of people as honorary members due to their ongoing and profound contribution to the company. We are delighted to count Louise Munro, Maureen Pringle, Anne Harvey, Marian Armstrong and Stella Reynolds as honorary life members of Inverness Musical Theatre..
We are also honoured and humbled to be able to count the celebrated lyricist and author Sir Tim Rice as our honorary president! With our honorary members and Sir Tim as role models, we'll always try our best to create shows worthy of such talent and dedication, and who knows - maybe we'll even be able to perform one of Sir Tim's shows soon? Feel free to read this article about this exciting news in the Inverness Courier! |

I'd like to perform on stage, but I don't want a leading role. Can I choose what I do?
Absolutely! As well as auditioning for the main roles, you are also able to join as an ensemble member. We'll always work to your ability, and will help everyone to stay within their comfort zone!
Where do IMT rehearse?
We usually rehearse in the Spectrum Centre in Inverness. We'll announce venues prior to rehearsals beginning.

There'll always be at least one committee member present at the rehearsal, who will welcome you when you arrive.
